Bizarre spelling – English knows how to confuse

Pronouncing Löwenbräu the German way might look hard, but once you’ve cracked the relationship between German spelling and pronunciation, it makes sense. The same can’t be said of English, where the relationship between spelling and pronunciation often seems to have been invented by someone who was just out to make our schooldays miserable.

Maybe God is punishing us for having a stripped-down grammar system by landing us with a system of spelling that is, frankly, barmy. If you’re not convinced, just take a look at this. I found it on a website, although I’ve seen variations of it over the years and am sure it may already have done the rounds:

Rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman, John Gough, strode through the streets of Scarborough; after falling into a slough on Coughlin road near the lough (dry due to drought), he coughed and hiccoughed, then checked his horse’s houghs and washed up in a trough.
